Netflix: First VR Game
Getting into video games and a new feature that might fit the Netflix world
It has just been a month since the testing of Netflix android games in Poland and Netflix is making the headlines in gaming again.
The latest buzz is around the launch of Netflix’s first Virtual Reality game “Eden Unearthed” on App Lab for Oculus Quest.
For the people who do not know what “App Lab” or “Oculus Quest” is — Oculus Quest is a VR headset developed by Oculus (a division of Facebook). App Lab Quest is a platform that was launched, in early 2021, for developers to distribute their games on the headset without going through Oculus’ curation process.
Over the past 10 years, Netflix started diversifying its video content engagement through offerings such as ‘Netflix Originals’, ‘Netflix Living Room’ experience for Oculus in 2015 and ‘Netflix Interactives’ in 2017. Some of its top competitors such as Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney plus Hotstar are not far behind in the VR experience services.
While Netflix strategizes to stand out from competitors, I was thinking of a feature that would fit well in the Netflix world…
Netflix Original VR series or movies in which a user can choose the Point of View. The user can choose to see events unfold through the eyes of a main character/side character/ideal observer. For example — Stranger Things through Eleven’s point of view whenever she is on screen.
There are several films and series that implemented first-person shots to enable the viewers to see through the lens of the character, hearing and seeing just as they are. Netflix can offer it as a choice through its Originals.
With its recent plans to buy the Roald Dahl Story Co., we can expect Netflix to produce more immersive games based on Mr. Dahl’s creations (Fantastic Mr. Fox, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc.).
